On January 29th, 2015, the FIDV Young Leadership Board hosted its First Annual Winter Gala. With over 570 guests at the beautiful Tribeca Rooftop, it was certainly a night to remember all in support of Israel’s wounded veterans.

It was a fun filled evening of eating, drinking, and dancing, but the highlight of the night was an inspiring speech by special guest, Noam Gershony. Noam, an Apache helicopter pilot, was severely wounded in a collision between two helicopters while on his way to a mission during the second Lebanon war in 2006. Falling from over 6,000 feet, Noam overcame many hardships and obstacles to win the gold medal in Wheelchair Tennis at the 2012 Paralympic Games in London.

Noam Gershony

Noam’s remarkable story represents the experiences of the 50,000 Beit Halochem members who have truly overcome the most unthinkable obstacles. The Beit Halochem (House of the Warriors) centers in Jerusalem, Haifa, Tel-Aviv, and Be’er Sheva, provide rehabilitative care to Israel’s wounded veterans who have sacrificed their own health to protect the Jewish nation. As Noam eloquently stated, “Though my injury made me think of all the things I can’t do, Beit Halochem helped me focus on all the things I can do.”

Thank you to our entire Young Leadership Board, led by co-chairs Michael Shmuely and Jacob Kent, who made this gala possible. We’d also like to thank the FIDV Board, led by Chairman Michael Leichtling, who continue to support the Young Leaders in their endeavors.

If you or someone you know is interested in getting involved with the Young Leaders please contact FIDV National Executive Director, Ella Levine, at elevine@fidv.org. Thank you to Noam, for sharing this story, and uniting a crowd of over 550 people in efforts to improve the lives of disabled Israeli veterans. And most importantly, thank you to all of the members of Beit Halochem, the wounded veterans, who have made unthinkable sacrifices to guarantee homeland for the Jewish people.
